The Monkey Wrench Gang: The Law breaking Heroes Essay example -- Monke
The Monkey Wrench Gang: The Law breaking Heroes Everyone knows that breaking the law is bad and anybody who does is a criminal, but Edward Abbey author of The Monkey Wrench Gang (1975), puts a twist on those thoughts. The Monkey Wrench Gang is an adventurous novel about a gang of environmentalists who set out to destroy bulldozers, bridges, cars, trains, signs or anything that is destroying their beautiful country, the American southwest. Through characterization and description Edward Abbey glorifies the art of law breaking and leaves his readers rooting for his heroic criminals. In the Monkey Wrench Gang there are four main characters: Bonnie Abbzug, Doc Sarvis, Seldom Seen Smith and George Hayduke. As individuals they never become much of a threat but as a team the fire really begins to spread. Out of all these characters Hayduke is the most prominent idealist. Hayduke is a beer-guzzling, veteran of the Vietnam War who has a grudge against the American government. The rebellious slob, sick of the human civilization and their unappreciation for the desert, decides to join forces with the others to save the American Southwest from a wrongful death. "My job is to save the f@#*ing wilderness. I don't know anything else worth saving."-Hayduke (211). The Significance of the Title to the Novel the Pearl
The significance of the title to the novel ââ¬ËThe Pearlââ¬â¢. The novel ââ¬ËThe Pearlââ¬â¢ by John Steinbeck is such a novel that really interest me as a reader. What is really appropriate is the title itself which incorporate ââ¬Ëthe pearlââ¬â¢, the essence of the story. The pearl is very significant to the title because without ââ¬Ëthe pearl of the worldââ¬â¢, the story just would not exist. The novel could not stand by itself if the pearl is not found. We can also see that any story would not be interesting without conflicts. The pearl has created conflicts among the characters in the novel. Thus, it can be said that it is the pearl that moves the story. The characters are nothing without the pearl. The pearl is the beginning and the end of the novel. As readers, we can see that the pearl appears as something significant when Kino found it. The finding of the pearl is described vividly in the story. Its colour and shape are shown by the writer graphically. The response from Kino who clinched his fist triumphantly and his friends who come in drove show the importance of the pearl. We realized that the story revolves around the pearl. This continues till the end of the story. The disappearance of the pearl when it was thrown by Kino marks the end of the story. Therefore, the pearl is a single entity which is very important to the novel. The pearl is crucial as the title as it differentiate between good and evil and between the poor and the wealthy. It becomes a priceless commodity that turns the character into who they are. Those who wish to be evil use the pearl for evil purposes whereas the good just need it for their normal life. Thus the pearl is very significant to both parties, and to the title of the novel. A novel energy lies in the existence of powerful characters and plot. Although the pearl is not a character, its involvement in nearly all the important happenings is a statement that it is the energy that drives the story forwa rd. Those who touch it become obsess with it and those who havenââ¬â¢t are willing to do anything to get it. Kino becomes obsessed with the pearl promises and the doctor is willing to sacrifice his professional etiquette to obtain the pearl. It seems that the energy of the pearl is uncontrollable. This makes ââ¬ËThe Pearlââ¬â¢ a remarkable tale that interest readers. A story needs a suitable setting which suit the period. The pearl is a perfect instrument that suits a story that takes place in La Paz, an important pearl producer in American Continent. We can imagine that if the pearl is replaced with other thing, the novel would become dull and the story becomes irrelevant. It is an important tool that require by many people in La Paz, including the natives and the wealthy immigrants.Kino himself said that the pearl is his soul. The pearl that drives the economy of La Paz is also the one that drives the plot of ââ¬ËThe Pearlââ¬â¢. The points above have shown that the t itle of the novel ââ¬ËThe Pearlââ¬â¢ which uses the pearl of the world as its main ingredient is rightly chosen. The title ââ¬ËThe Pearlââ¬â¢ perfectly suits the story plot. It also provides the right ingredient for conflicts and a foundation for a never ending quests for a good life.

Rape Essay - 830 Words
Rape is an atrocious crime where rapists are rightfully despised. There are several severe laws against rape and sexual assault. The media, leftist politicians, and feminists say that 1 in 5 women will get raped in their four-year college career. While rape has been a serious problem for decades, there is certainly no evidence that there is a national rape epidemic, or that rape or sexual assault is the social norm in this age. Rape rates, in fact, have been on a decline for the past century. The 1 in 5 number is not true. The notion that 1 in 5 young women will get raped in her college career should give you a sense of urgency that out of the 500 young women in your junior class, 100 of them will fall victim to this statistic. Well,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦To the point where professors, according to Harvard Law Professor Jeannie Suk in a recent study, arenââ¬â¢t able to put rape-related questions on tests by request of rape survivors because they fear that they wonââ¬â¢ t perform as well. Some campuses now have to be careful to not allow such art or speech on grounds because some students might ââ¬Å"triggerâ⬠some memories of this crime. For example a few years ago in the all-womenââ¬â¢s Wellesley College, the student body protested to take down a sculpture of a sleepwalking man wearing just underwear because they believed it served little more than just to trigger sexual assault survivors. An incident in Scripps College disinvited Pulitzer Prize-winning commentator George Will to speak at their campus because he questioned and belittled this so-called ââ¬Ërape epidemicââ¬â¢. Liberal states like California and New York now have affirmative consent laws that make it easier for sex to become rape, such as if the person doesnââ¬â¢t resist or speak during the time of intercourse, that would still be considered rape. Feel compassion for the poor college students who have to handle and are caught in the middle of such chaos this statistic caused.
